The Science of Addictions - Real or Imagined?
I don't doubt for a second, and would never dispute, the sad realities of addictions, especially to a drug or other chemical substance.
One can argue the brain will release chemicals under mental stimulation, which act in a similar manner. I'm not going to claim to be an expert on the subject, but one would assume this is the argument that goes into claiming gambling can be an addiction.
But even so - where does one draw the line between claiming a gambling addiction as a disease versus the complete lack of personal responsibility?
Take the case of Paul Burrell. The Nova Scotia native gambled away a $200,000 worker's compensation settlement, family savings of $80,000 and roughly $200,000 from his remortgaged house and personal loans.
His response? He lodged a complaint with the Nova Scotia Alcohol and Gaming Authority, the agency that enforces the casino regulations.
Burrell has also threatened to the sue the provincial government.
So is Burrell suffering a legitimate disease? Or is he just an irresponsible fool?

Hello Jeff thank you for your comments. I dont think Mr Burrell is a fool but a victim of the goverments implementation of these machines to society this falls under product Liability and I must say these people are nothing less than robbers taking advantage of innocent people. These machines have the ablity to change people and should be classified as very dangerous with labels indicating that fact.I can only imagine the pain this has caused many families and Mr Burrell also I wish Mr Burrell good luck against this disgusting endeavour our goverment has brought to our society.
I have no pity for Paul Burrell. I was a student going to Cape Breton University from September 2004 to August 2005 and was boarding at his house. There was a total of 5 boarders there who were all paying between $300 and $350 a month, plus so much for internet and cable. I guess my first hit that he had a problem was when the cable got cut because he was not paying his bill, which us boarders were really paying. Then when i contacted the cable company to get cable in my room they would not come to that house to hook up cable because there was so much owing on the account. Then he bought a satilate dish, which I bought a receiver for. It was only about a month later that there was messages appearing saying that the bill was not paid. I recently tried to hook the receiver up after leaving and moving back home, but it can not be hooked up because there is an outstanding amount owing on it. I think that Mr. Burrell is more of a SCAM ARTIST then a VICTIM!!
